oaklandmuseumcaThe #BlackPantherParty established the Intercommunal Youth Institute, also known as the Oakland Community School, in January 1971 for black and poor youths in the community. An outcome of the Ten Point Platform, the school was created to help children learn at their highest potential and to provide a pathway for future academic success. The #BlackPanthers set out to provide analytical teaching styles and to increase literacy in their communities. In September 1977, California Governor Jerry Brown and California legislature gave OCS an award for “having set the standard for the highest level of elementary education in the state." #BlackPanthersAt50
