#OnThisDay in 1948, the United Nations opened the Second Session of the Commission on the Status of Women. This fifteen-member functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. 
The Commission prepares recommendations and reports to the Council on promoting women's rights in political, civil, social and educational fields.

In 2017, the Commission's priority theme is "Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work".
