Due to the earth being round (and tilted) the closer you are to the equator, the more wild a swing your day to night ratio will be (the equator is always an even 12/12). During winter, due to the tilt, it swings the way of longer daylight the more south you travel, it reverses during summer. (This is also why parts of Alaska go weeks with little to no daylight.)
