opensocietyfoundationsIn 2001, when the United Nations declared Kosovo "mine free", the 18 de-mining agencies operating on the ground were ordered to leave the country. In 2008, when a serious accident occurred in the Pristina region, the UN revised its position and allowed them to return to work. Among these, Halo Trust now operates with a 117-person team in hundreds of sites contaminated by unexploded mines. The goal is to return to the Kosovo’s rural population a clean and decontaminated land within 7-10 years. Here, a de-miner at work in the woods surrounding the village of Balincë. December 2016.
