Today Berea students, identifying themselves as the Student Intersectional Coalition, held a rally to show solidarity between their student groups and the institution at a time when some people of color and members of the Muslim, LGBTQIA+, and DACA communities feel marginalized or at risk due to recent external events. Dean Chad Berry speaking on behalf of President Roelofs and the college administration, assured students, “we stand squarely against sexism, racism, homophobia, Islamophobia, and xenophobia.” Berea College, he said, will “provide space for all members of the community to express their perspective” with civility.
