These days we get to move around globally, and it’s both inspiring and shocking to see people adapting to their changing environments, no matter what the urban realities are. We recently returned from Tehran, where the streets are completely overrun by cars (the more powerful – the better). Yet, everyday life has to navigate and manifest itself in the exact same urban space as vehicles, producing at times odd assemblages of seemingly displaced items and material combinations. Whether we view them as vernacular survival practices or casually aesthetical clutter, they somehow seem hopeful, as the humane side of the modern city.
