A society that makes you say, when you are twelve or fourteen or seventeen, "No matter what, when I grow up, I am never going to be the woman that tolerates that!" . Sarong Party Girls follows three female friends in Singapore as they navigate their way through bars, clubs, friendships and family expectations in the quest for a wealthy husband, intended to be their ticket out of Singapore and key to the ultimate prize - a Chanel baby. . I've since seen this book referred to as a modern Asian take on Austen, which is actually a very good way to put this! SPG is full of irony and tongue in cheek social commentary. At times I felt like this could have been a but subtler but I still enjoyed it, even if I found myself struggling with a lot of the views and actions of the main character Jazzy, whose determination with the mission to find a husband made her at times both a bully to others, and vulnerable herself. . The book is written in Singlish which is Singaporean English. I've got to be honest, it took a while to pick up, but that isn't to put people off as in fact once I'd got it I found it added to my enjoyment of the book and feeling of immersion. . Thanks to @readersfirst for the opportunity to read and review this book - it's not one I would have perhaps picked up myself and I was glad to read it! . #bookstoread #booksofinstagram #Bookstagram #bookreview #bookoftheday #igreads #sarongpartygirls #cheryllulientan #singapore #alwaysreading #booksbooks
