Goals may not always be acheived but  setting them is an important step to get ya where ya want to go!

Something we use quite a bit in the nutrition world is setting S.M.A.R.T. goals to increase the success rate. This means setting goals that are:

S: Specific.
M: Measurable. 
A: Attainable.
R: Realistic.
T: Time Frame.

P.S. My goals aren't complete SMART goals ... yet. I'm in the process of adding deadlines and more specific action plans to get 'er done.
