Our 2017 Mandela Washington Fellows are in Detroit today and tomorrow to meet with various business and civic leaders, as well as explore the culture of the Motor City. Currently, they're getting a briefing about the city's QLINE streetcar system. #YALIatND #YALI2017

Community service is a major aspect of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders and on June 24 our fellows volunteered with The Unity Gardens. The fellows, along with high school students from the Holy Cross Conference for Student Leaders, spent the morning preparing the land for planting, which will be done later this week by children participating in the garden's Kid's Camp. Sara L. Stewart, president and executive director, taught the fellows more about the garden's purpose in #SouthBend, which is primarily to provide fresh, healthy food at no cost to members of the community living in food deserts. This past Sunday, consultant John Pinter, the rest of the #YALIatND team, and the 2017 Mandela Washington Fellows participated in a cross-cultural exercise called BaFa' BaFa'. The exercise, which split the group into two very different "Alpha" and "Beta" cultures, allowed all involved to better understand the powerful effects that culture plays in every person’s life. Afterward, the team and the fellows had an honest and productive discussion about some of the cultural challenges they have or may encounter in the U.S. and how to successfully handle them. Last week, Notre Dame doctoral candidate Lucia Tiscornia (left), Professor Michael Coppedge (second from left), and NDIGD Program Director Tom Hare (third from left) opened a regional learning exchange on human rights and democracy in El Salvador as part of the Regional Project on Human Rights and Democracy (RightsCA). The project, which is led by the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) and funded by USAID, seeks to support educational institutions and civil society organizations working on critical human rights and democracy issues in the region.
