Peatlands aren't just a pretty face you know. Here is the Dark Peak in the Peak District looking particularly gorgeous. But whilst peatlands are wonderful wild places to #getoutdoors, they also *stores 3.2bn tonnes of carbon, (that is a lot of carbon)
*provide 70 per cent of clean drinking water
*helping slow the flow of water down hill to stop flooding down stream
*home to specialist plants and animals and birds like merlin and sphagnum moss

However four fifths of our peatlands need help and restoration so it's good news that @defrauk have today announced they have £10M available. So if you look after a peatland that needs restoration please check the link in our bio for details.

Great news to share with you. Back in November we notified a huge area - 28 square miles - of West Pennine Moors between Chorley, Blackburn. Bolton and Haslingdon. We've been busy consulting with land owners and occupiers and local people on the run up to approving it and conferring permanent protection for a host of wildlife on the site. Today the Natural England board did just that! Something to celebrate 👍#sssi #nature #wildlife #naturalengland

Many congratulations to the Holkham Estate - our area manager Sarah Dawkins was there to help celebrate the announcement that Holkham is only the second private estate to take over the running of a national nature reserve.

Natural England’s Area Manager for Norfolk and Suffolk Sarah Dawkins commented “I’m so pleased to celebrate not only the 50th anniversary of Holkham National Nature Reserve but another major milestone. It’s a real testimony to the commitment and the vision of the Estate that we’ve awarded them approved body status. Only one other private estate has attained this distinction, so it’s a huge recognition of Holkham’s achievement as stewards of this special place. The opportunities to see amazing wildlife here are endless – from spoonbills to the antlion to the vast flocks of wintering pink footed geese – it’s no surprise Holkham attracts so many people. The estate’s expertise as a visitor attraction will ensure visitors can enjoy the wildlife spectacles and leave with a newfound knowledge. It’s great to know that this National Nature Reserve is in such good hands and I very much look forward to working with Lord Leicester and his team in their new guise.” .
The Holkham Estate is to manage the Holkham National Nature Reserve after receiving ‘Approved Body Status’ from Natural England.
Holkham will now manage one of the UK’s most important sites for nature conservation on the north Norfolk coast.
