Earlier today, we celebrated the topping out ceremony for the new nine-story Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center, expected to be completed in June 2018. The final two beams, signed by patients, family members, visitors, team members and physicians, were ceremoniously raised to the top of the more than 330,000-square-foot building. When complete, the new cancer center will be triple the size of the current Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center, which opened in October 2015. As a partner member of MD Anderson Cancer Network®, Baptist MD Anderson builds on the strengths of one of Florida’s top regional health systems and our expertise in multidisciplinary, research-driven, patient-centered cancer care. Nelda Blair refused to let HPV-related anal cancer rule her life. The successful real estate lawyer insisted on maintaining her career while undergoing treatment. To make it happen, though, she relied on MD Anderson in The Woodlands, which was near her home and office. After completing her morning radiation therapy, Nelda went about her regular work day. “I really think that the attitudes of the patient and the doctor make the difference,” she says. “If the patient is determined that cancer is not going to alter her lifestyle or be the main focus of life, then it won’t be.” Though she admits cancer has left its mark by way of side effects – a weakened sense of taste, a more sensitive colon and menopause – she’s learned to find a new normal and carry on. “Cancer doesn’t have to define you. After three ovarian cancer recurrences, Diane Sarver decided to research other options besides the chemotherapy drugs she’d been taking. The Oregon resident made her way down to MD Anderson, where she enrolled in a Phase IB clinical trial that’s part of our Ovarian Cancer Moon Shot program. “After about the first seven weeks, all of my test results had normalized, which is to me, a remarkable response,” she says. “In fact, they call me an ‘unusual responder,’” she says. She plans to remain in the clinical trial as long as the drugs -- olaparib, which has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and AZD2014, an investigational drug – keep working and she doesn’t have any side effects. “I am extremely appreciative every day to have the opportunity to participate in this clinical trial at MD Anderson,” she says. “I cannot encourage people enough to gain knowledge, ask questions and learn to become your own best advocate.” #cancer #cancersucks #cancersurvivor #survivor #houston #hospital #mdanderson #endcancer
For some of our childhood cancer patients, MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital Camps Program is the only chance they might get to enjoy time in the outdoors with other kids or teens. These week-long sleep-away camps are free to our pediatric patients and their siblings and include a full on-site medical clinic staffed by MD Anderson employees, including physicians, physician’s assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and child life specialists. “Week-long sleep-away camps for patients and their siblings offer a break from ‘being sick’ to let them be normal kids, without interrupting their treatments,” says Lauren Shinn, who manages special patient programing for our Children’s Cancer Hospital. #cancer #camp #summercamp #childhoodcancerawareness #houston #mdanderson #kids #hospital #cancersucks #endcancer
As Damion Smith learned during one of his first appointments at MD Anderson, you’re considered a cancer survivor the day you receive your diagnosis. “Everyone says it’s important to have a positive mindset during treatment, and this message was just so positive that it inspired me to channel that outlook,” Damion says. Damion was diagnosed with throat cancer in July. Cinda Matthews became a volunteer at MD Anderson after she walked through the halls as a patient years ago. “I enjoyed visiting with the volunteers and appreciated their work during both of my long-term stays,” she says. “I’m so grateful for my treatment at MD Anderson and wanted to give to others something of what had been given to me.” In 2003, Cinda was diagnosed with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, which at the time had an average survival rate of two to five years. Her doctors recommended a “reduced intensity” stem cell transplant, which uses lower levels of chemotherapy and radiation to wipe out most of a cancerous cells in a patient’s bone marrow before replacing them with a donor’s healthy cells. She underwent the procedure, but relapsed 18 months later. She underwent the procedure again in 2006 and has been in remission ever since. “I learned from this experience that many things happen in life beyond our control,” she says, “The disease as well as the treatment process has caused me to appreciate my many blessings. Weeks after Hans Rueffert finished taping the finale for the “Next @FoodNetwork Star,” he started experiencing what he thought were heart attack symptoms: chest tightness and difficulty swallowing. A trip to the ER led to a completely different diagnosis: stomach cancer. Hans came to MD Anderson, where Dr. Wayne Hoffstetter eventually removed all of his stomach and esophagus and moved his jejunum to where his esophagus used to be. “I have a better quality of life with no stomach at all than I did with half a stomach,” Hans says He now spends his time teaching others how to stay positive during the cancer journey and developing a new appreciation for your passion. For him, that means savoring every bite of food. “Having been told three times now that I might not have a tomorrow, today I genuinely eat like there’s no tomorrow.
