#Somaliland technically still doesn’t exist in the eyes of the rest of the political world, despite having proclaimed its independence from Somalia in 1991, following a civil war that killed about 50,000 in the region. In the capital, #Hargeisa, people encounter a mishmash of chaotic local market commerce existing alongside diaspora-funded construction including glass-fronted office buildings, Wi-Fi enabled cafes and air-conditioned gyms, all suffused with characteristic Somali energy and dynamism.
With less than half the world’s population online, #radio continues to be world’s most widely accessible source of news and information. The conviction rate for #rape in Pakistan has been less than four percent, prompting protests and legal reforms. The #impunity of rapists and the ordeal of rape victims deter the latter from seeking justice. “The shameful attitude of society, police and lawyers towards rape victims is the biggest hurdle in securing justice,” said Faisal Siddiqui, a Karachi-based lawyer.
