Miroslava was denied travel insurance because of her age. This is discrimination. Here older women in Nduta refugee camp in Tanzania are making baskets they can sell in local markets to host communities and other refugees. Emergency relief is not all about food, goods and healthcare. As humanitarian emergencies become more protracted, dragging on for year after year, refugees need support that will help them in the long-term. In refugee camps in Tanzania we at HelpAge International are helping refugees from Burundi apply their existing skills and acquire new skills that enable them to earn an income in the camp - a lasting, sustainable intervention that increases self-reliance and helps integrate people into their communities. Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and we are launching a new report called 'Entitled to the same rights' in which older women are speaking out about their human rights. It focuses on older women's right to non-discrimination and equality, and their right to freedom from violence, abuse and neglect. Women from across 19 countries and in varying social and economic situations reported discrimination in different areas of their lives, including employment, healthcare and accessing financial services. On International Women’s Day, hear the story of Rocío, who has been a victim of domestic abuse in Buenaventura, Colombia, and has used these experiences to now stand up for other women’s rights. Two years ago Rocío’s husband went from being a calm, respected man and a good father, to someone prone to outbursts of violent aggression. “He started doing things he had never done before. He hit me and gave me death threats. I could not make sense of what was happening,” she said. At first, Rocío found it hard to report him and seek help. She endured the abuse for months. But when he attacked her son, it was the last straw and she ran away. She reported him to a victim care centre and an investigation was started, but after a year no progress was made. Seeing how inadequate services were for people like her, Rocío decided to take action herself. She is part of an organisation that defends the rights of the most vulnerable people, especially women and older people. "I always imagined a quiet later life with my husband, but I learned that violence against women can come at any age. Now, I advise women, especially older women, not to tolerate abuse. Many older women let such violence happen. In our culture, they believe a man exercises control and strength in the home, but that must change,” she said. “Young women must change that mentality to one of entrepreneurship, independence, and above all equality with men. This Burundian man lives in Nduta refugee camp in Tanzania. Every day is a struggle for him as his arm muscles continually contract, meaning he can't straighten it with ease. The simplest tasks such as eating and cleaning are a challenge. But with physiotherapy, these obstacles to a dignified and comfortable life can be overcome. In Nduta, we at HelpAge are supporting vulnerable Burundians to regain their strength so they can better care for themselves and their families. With the assistance of our staff and some simple equipment, his condition is going from strength to strength.
