Jonny Kim, M.D. '16, an emergency medicine resident and a former Navy SEAL, has been named to @nasa's 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class.⠀ ⠀ Kim, a 2016 @harvardmed graduate, was one of a dozen candidates picked by NASA in June for its next astronaut class. A year into a four-year residency, Kim will put his medical career on hold so he can learn to fly a plane, spacewalk, operate @iss’s robotic arm, and master other skills NASA considers essential. 👨‍🚀⠀ ⠀ #Harvard
Sandeep Koshy, Ph.D., researcher in David Mooney’s Laboratory for Cell and Tissue Engineering, is the first profiled in a new series by the Wyss Institute at Harvard called “The Humans of Wyss”. Sandeep is working in the Immuno-Materials Focus Area. Read on, and be sure to follow @wyssinstitute for more profiles and incredible images of biologically-inspired engineering at work. 🔬 ⠀ ⠀ What drives you?⠀ ⠀ I’m determined to make an impact on how cancer is treated using the immune system. There is just so much potential to benefit human health using this approach, and I’m dedicated to making a contribution.⠀ ⠀ You’re working on biomaterials-based delivery systems, tell us more.⠀ ⠀ I work on biomaterials-based delivery systems that can present drugs to immune cells in a way that trains them to fight cancer. The smart materials that we are developing are able to improve the safety and targeting of these drugs to the appropriate immune cells to get better treatment outcomes.⠀ ⠀ Share with us some challenges you’re facing.⠀ ⠀ One of the biggest challenges right now is our limited knowledge of how the human immune system interacts with tumors. Some patients experience dramatic response to current immunotherapy drugs while others show no benefit. Understanding why these differences exist and what really drives productive immune responses against cancer are critical to designing better material-based immunotherapy systems that can be used in all patients.⠀ ⠀ So, how do you envision your research impacting the world?⠀ ⠀ Immuno-materials, the marriage of biomaterials with immunotherapy, has massive potential for impacting cancer patients by improving the safety and activity of existing drugs. Additionally, drugs that have “failed” in clinical trials due to toxicity and poor efficacy could potentially be revived using these approaches, providing tremendous cost-savings to companies performing drug development.

S. Allen Counter, the founding director of the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations and a noted neurophysiologist, educator, and ethnographer, died on July 12.⠀ ⠀ “Harvard has lost a great champion of inclusion and belonging in Dr. Allen Counter,” said President Drew Faust. “Through his leadership of the Harvard Foundation, he advanced understanding among members of our community and challenged all of us to imagine and strive for a more welcoming University and a more peaceful world. We remember today a campus citizen whose deep love of Harvard, and especially our undergraduates, leaves a lasting legacy.”
