Had a chance to test out a new piece of equipment in the NATL this afternoon...a wide angle macro lens allows the photographer to get close to its subject but retain elements of the subject's surroundings. I got lucky when this gulf fritillary landed on this Passion flower I was practically touching with my lens! Jiri Hulcr, PhD and assistant professor with the School of Forest Resource and Conservation, examines a piece from his recently installed exhibit Bark Beetle Calligraphy in the West Gallery of the Florida Museum of Natural History. His exhibit, though he says "I'm not the artist, the beetles are," beautifully displays the markings bark beetles leave behind in wood alongside microscopic images of the small but diverse beetles. One of the exhibit pieces placed honorable mention in the 2016 Elegance of Science contest.
