From #1973 to #1978, the Department’s Translating and Interpreting Service’s (#TISNational) call centre handled 412,993 calls, they used a manual directory and call transfer machine custom made by #Telecom #Australia. These days TIS National receives more than 1 million calls per year and uses an electronic database to connect clients to nearly 3000 interpreters. #ThrowbackThursday
#NAIDOCweek2017 might be ending, but that doesn’t mean we’ve finished celebrating it. Yesterday, 6 June, our staff were treated to story time talks and a basket-weaving workshop presented by two Indigenous companies from #Canberra, who wove lessons about Indigenous culture into the session.

We’re celebrating #NAIDOCweek2017 and today, for #ThrowbackThursday, we’re looking back to March #2005 when we were the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs. #EmuPoint, 320km south-west of #Darwin, signed one of the first Shared Responsibility Agreements with the #Australian Government. Community elders committed to help young people develop stock-handling skills and passed down cultural knowledge and skills, to help nurture Emu Point’s young people, while the Government committed to building a childcare centre and providing resources to help the community become self-sufficient.
#NAIDOC week celebrations are in full swing. Today we hosted a #fundraising BBQ with all proceeds raised, going to support the @cathyfreemanfoundation charity that provides educational programs in remote Indigenous communities. We were also lucky to have with us #Indigenous musician, Belinda Whyte. #naidoc2017

Who nose what day it is? 30 June is @rednosedayaustralia, and some of our staff are following their noses to support them in raising funds to achieve a future where no child dies suddenly and unexpectedly during pregnancy, infancy or childhood. #rednosedayoz

#Australia’s population reached 24.5 million last Friday - 23 June #2017 - and to celebrate that milestone, this week’s #ThrowbackThursday looks back to #1982 when Australia’s population of 15 million was projected to grow to almost 20 million by the distant future – the year #2000 – in our annual report. These estimates ended up being quite accurate – Australia’s population was 19.1 million on 31 December 2000.
¡Hola España! Good news if you’re a #Spanish national aged between 18 and 30. We’re increasing the number of spaces available under existing work and holiday arrangements from 600 to 1500 annually from 1 July #2017. This means you can holiday for up to 12 months in #Australia and undertake short-term work. The same reciprocal conditions also allow young #Australians to work and holiday in #Spain. It's wheels up for the outgoing passenger card as we bid goodbye to it. That's right, from 1 July 2017, you will not be required to fill one out as you depart #Australia. Happy days for you, not so for the card. #leavingonajetplane

Our grads have once again risen to the occasion in our annual graduate bake-off. All our #Canberra staff were keen to get a slice of the action, digging deep to support the Canberra Refugee Support Group. And the icing on the cake: all funds raised will be used to provide scholarships to children in the #ACT from refugee backgrounds. #RefugeeWeek
