In January 2015, Pakistan remains one of only three countries worldwide where polio remains endemic. The country’s Polio Plus initiative aims to augment eradication efforts in high-risk areas through cross-sectoral interventions, including other routine immunization, nutrition, maternal and child health, and water, sanitation and hygiene. In August 2014 in Eritrea, recurrent drought, food insecurity and rising food prices, as well as an unresolved border dispute with Ethiopia, are among the factors that continue to affect the overall health, and well-being of children and families in the country. An increase in under-five child malnutrition rates, poor access to safe drinking water, and regional disparities in sanitation coverage are also of significant concern. Additionally, more than one third of children between the ages of 7 and 14 are out of school, and although injuries from landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) have shown a decline, just 25 per cent of mine fields have been cleared, and the number of child deaths and injuries remain alarmingly high. #promise4children
