When it comes to juvenile justice, communities that use Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiatives (JDAI) principles are far better off today than when Casey started the effort 25 years ago. So what’s next? “Moving forward, JDAI will explore root causes — not just the numbers, but the reasons behind them — to address racial and ethnic inequities across the juvenile justice system,” says Nate Balis, director of Casey’s Juvenile Justice Strategy Group. My name is Rochelle and I’m a Jim Casey Young Fellow. Young people and I played a critical role in educating New Mexico’s lawmakers about the challenges youth who experience homelessness, foster care or juvenile justice have in getting their school records transferred to a new school. By expediting the records, they can get into the classes they need to graduate on time.

At @fosteringadvocatesarizona, we educated lawmakers about the need to allow foster youth to have the same experiences as kids not in care (the professionals call it “normalcy”). Kids should be able to take drivers safety courses and buy auto insurance.Two members played a huge role by sharing their personal experiences, which led the Governor of Arizona to pass a bill! Now, foster youth have the opportunity to become more independent! #abrighterfuture #fostercare #jimcasey #igtakeover

My name is Leonardo Johnson and I am a youth support partner in Pittsburgh. At my site, we advocate for and support youth that are in the system - whether the system is child welfare, juvenile justice or mental health. Currently, I have seven youths on my caseload. Some of their goals are to be self-sufficient, more responsible and become better students. I love it here because we can share our personal experiences of growing up and truly be involved in a youth’s life. We celebrate when they achieve their goals, support their hobbies and also support them through court. It's a great way to make a change and I'm glad to be a part of it! #abrighterfuture #fostercare #jimcasey
