Luckily the rain held off today and we got the chance to take the canoes (and a kayak) out on Pymatuning Reservoir. I talked about how disease dynamics are different on islands and we had some really great discussions!
Areas with steep coastlines, narrow fjords, and glacially carved features such as Alaska, Greenland, and Norway are at risk from tsunamis generated by landslides sliding into coastal water bodies. Previously these events have been modeled with a two-phase model coupled together, using the output of the landslide model as the input for the tsunami model. A new study in Geophysical Research Letters uses a model for a subaerial landslide-generated tsunami as one single continuum, a fusion of debris flow modelling and tsunami modelling in one problem. Teaching a field course has similar constraints to field work, I.e. weather. This is our current forecast here in NW Pennsylvania. Don't mind the rain, lightning is something else. Fortunately, my students are giving presentations today on implications of wildlife diseases on public policy so being inside is OK!

A massive iceberg just broke off the #LarsenC ice shelf in #Antarctica. This time-lapse video shows the growth of the crack in Larsen C from the mid-2000s through 2016. The tip of the crack is represented by the red dot. A recent study in Geophysical Research Letters shows rifts in the Larsen C ice shelf tend to stop when they hit parts of the ice known as suture zones. Suture zones are bands of ice several kilometers wide running from the grounding line out to sea that are made of ice from different glaciers and sea water that have frozen together. The new study finds the large crack that wound its way across Larsen C took much longer to punch through suture zones than through other types of ice, meaning these zones are far more important in holding ice shelves together than previously thought. In the presence of oxygen, redox reactions convert reduced iron (FeII) to oxidized iron (FeIII). #CoryLab and #ArcticLTER are measuring thaw depth near @toolikfieldstation. The Arctic is warming 2x as fast as the rest of the world due to the human caused climate change. The warming leads to increase in annual thaw depth and release of previously frozen carbon. #arcticscience #guestgrammer
