Drones. How could they possibly help to fight the impacts of climate change? The lowest lying country in the world, the Maldives, is giving it a shot. Climate change poses an existential threat to the nearly 400,000 people that call the island nation their home. More and more residents have to abandon their farms and living spaces due to disasters. So-called risk maps help to provide data that can be a matter of survival once a disaster hits. Creating these 3D maps isn’t as easy as it sounds, though. Mapping only 11 of the 160 inhabited islands would normally take up to year - time the Maldives cannot afford. That’s why we started using drones to chart the topography of the terrain. And the initial results are very promising: it took just one day for a drone to map an entire island. Drones alone cannot resolve the challenges brought on by climate change, but they can be a powerful ally for communities on the frontlines. © UNDP Maldives
Montenegro: What if your next vacation was…guilt-free? Due to its wild beauty and rich history, Montenegro is attracting ever-growing numbers of tourists. But just like any other tourist destination, this beautiful Western Balkan country can be harmed by booming tourism. On average, a tourist visiting Montenegro emits 6,5 kg of CO2 per day. We call that their carbon footprint and it’s not only bad for the environment, but for humans too. That’s why we’re helping Montenegro to go carbon-neutral. Tourists can measure the environmental impact of their stay through a web-based carbon calculator and even fund sustainable tourism projects. Do you love chocolate? We sure do. It tastes delicious and can benefit both the economy and the environment. In Guatemala, 90% of cocoa comes from small farms which people depend on for their income. To make sure these farmers and their families can still produce high quality chocolate years from now, we help them manage their farm in a more sustainable way. Producers not only learn how to protect their land from erosion and conserve biodiversity, but also how to boost their marketing activities to ensure they make a profit. Democratic Republic of the Congo: Turkey farming is a specialty of Idjwi, a densely populated island on Lake Kivu. Many women on the island rely on the money made from selling their poultry to feed their families and send their kids to school. But for those from rather isolated areas it has always been difficult to sell their turkey. Until now. A new farming cooperative helps these women to sell their products and trains them to sustainably manage their farms. Peru is the second largest exporter of organic coffee beans after Mexico. The country’s famed high-quality coffee reaches markets in over 50 countries. Despite its growing popularity abroad, the coffee sector still faces many problems at home. Most producers run their small farms without technical or business management expertise which makes it difficult to compete in the global market. Under pressure to increase their yields and feed their families, farmers turn to unsustainable practices putting forests, biodiversity, and climate at risk. Who is responsible for the health of our ocean? In India, villagers are taking matters into their own hands. Instead of spearing individual crabs to cook or take to market, they started farming mangrove crabs in muddy hatcheries. Sierra Leone: Sulaiman is one of over 2,000 volunteers who worked day and night – often without a break or food – to safely bury the bodies of Ebola victims during the country’s outbreak of the epidemic. At the time, many of the volunteers were ostracized by their communities because of the nontraditional burial methods and fears they could carry the virus themselves. We helped these brave women and men to return to their lives before Ebola by providing education and fighting the stigma through psycho-social support such as group counselling sessions. Afghanistan: A trainer shows female students how to check blood pressure and other vital signs. Afghanistan has some of the highest maternal and child mortality rates in the world. This is partly due to a lack of basic healthcare in rural areas. In response, we support six nursing colleges across the country that are training a new generation of female nurses.
